Salif Keita

How could a 19-year-old albino boy, descendant from the founder of Mali’s kingdom in the 13th century, turn his back on convention and become one of Africa’s greatest musicians? Only Salif Keita can truly answer that enigma. Since he arrived in Paris in 1984 the singer has established himself as one of the most celebrated personalities in “world music”. Keita has since returned to Bamako and spends much of his time in his home village of Djoliba.

Interviews

Paris, 2005

The interview took place before Salif Keita’s release of “M’bemba”, within the confines of Paris’s New Morning concert hall.

Since 2002 and his album “Moffou”, Keita has been focussing on a return to his Malian roots. In the capital Bamako, he has opened a recording studio and a prestigious nightclub that adopts the simple “moffou” wind instrument as its symbol. Keita explains why it was important to change cap and return to the refined musical heritage that he has become such a proud depository of.
